Musical Events

Shakespeare said, if music be the food of love, play on.  We have plenty of food in Franschhoek and we have plenty of music to accompany it.

Regular Classical Music concerts are held throughout the year at La Motte and during the Chamber Music Weekend as well as other activities.

Our local social venues have live cover bands on many nights of the week and we regularly host well-known South African artists who perform at Franschhoek Cellars.

Combine your love of music and wine and book a Music and Wine Pairing at one of our newest vineyards.  A unique activity for your next birthday or other group event.

Spring is around the corner and soon our valley will be hosting quite a few musical events.

Check back regularly to see what is on in and around the village.

By Black Elephant Vintners
Being the rebels of the vine, traditional wine and cheese pairings are not what you will find at Black Elephant Vintners. Instead, we offer a dexterously composed Music and Wine pairing. This novel approach to enhance the experience of the wine tasting process by utilising not only the senses of taste, touch, smell, and sight is what distinguishes Black Elephant Vintners from the others. This unique combination of sound and taste completely sets Black Elephant apart from the commercial wine industry.

Generally, we allow 2-3 hours for a tasting at the farm, but as there is no set agenda this can vary according to the extent of the conversation.  A silent disco tasting option is also available.

WHEN: They are held most Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 11am. (subject to variation)

COST: R360pp but used as a credit against purchases of R500pp or more on wines etc.

The renowned Amici Quartet returns to La Motte with a specially compiled programme featuring Suzanne Martens and Philip Martens on violin, Karen Gaertner on viola and Peter Martens on cello.

19 October 2019: Mozart Piano Trios with Trio de Musique
In a Mozart celebration, Trio de Musique will perform two piano trios; the G major K.496, composed in 1786 - the same year as Mozart’s opera “Le Nozze di Figaro", and the C major K.542, composed in 1788 - the same year he was working on his last three symphonies, including the “Jupiter”. The trio will give historical background to the music, discuss the music as well as read letters from the Mozart family as the program progresses. Featuring Thomas de Bruin on flute, Ariella Ciara on cello and Albert Combrink on piano.

2 November 2019: Antonio Chen Guang
Winner of the 2016 Olga Kern Piano competition, the Scriabin Prize and the Rome Prize, together with numerous other internationally renowned competitions, the twenty-one-year-old pianist Chen Guang visits South Africa for the first time. He is described as having an extraordinary technical capacity with a profound and mature musical sensibility and an exceptional on-stage charisma.

21 March to 28 March 2020
This annual Chamber Music Workshop offers musically gifted young people a week of intensive training in scenic Franschhoek. Music students of school going age up to matric may apply for this unique experience. A minimum of Grade 4 level of competence in music is recommended.

Participants receive professional and highly personalised instruction to encourage and develop their talent, to improve their prowess as a collaborative musician, and to achieve real progress in a self-enriching and fulfilling way.

Our approach is to provide structured, intensive work sessions over a 7-day period with an emphasis on tangible results and improvement. You will have at least 2 coached rehearsals per day, plus orchestral sessions and other topics of interest. One evening will be devoted to an informal "in-house" concert of solo works, followed by the hilarious and much loved "cabaret" devised by the students; another will find you testing your wits in a friendly music quiz with sumptuous prizes!

Concerts by the students are open to the public.
Dates and time to be advised.
