Majestic Mountain Hiking

Let's go hiking

Hiking in Franschhoek is an experience not to be missed when visiting Frasnchhoek. The valley is nestled between 4 beautiful mountains and it's the first thing you'll notice as you drive in.
Many trails are available for you to explore and they are best tackled with the help of a qualified nature guide. Your guide will not only steer you on the right path, but will add value to your experience by telling you a bit about the history of the area, point out interesting aspects of our local world-famous Fynbos vegetation and enlighten you about the birds, animals and insects seen on the hike.

PLEASE NOTE:  THE FRANSCHHOEK PASS IS OPEN!!  Uitkyk and Vista trails are now accessible.

From a short albeit steep 2 hour ramble to a more strenuous hike, we have a trail to suit all tastes.  The Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve has 2 lovely trails (Uitkyk & Vista) and the Berg River Dam Conservation Area has one (Snake Alley).  We also offer hikes at the La Motte Wine Estate and in the Jonkershoek Mountains in Stellenbosch.  All hikes have stunning views of various parts of the valley and mountains.
Plenty of photo opportunities exist along the trails and some have access to beautiful crystal clear water in the streams that flow from the mountains into our various rivers and dams.

Hiking in Franschhoek is an experience you'll treasure for years to come.

Topiary Wine Farm

New koppie-skipping trail
Set on the lovely Topiary wine farm, the new Franschhoek Fan Aloe Trail is a brand new trail which runs along the 4 koppies (rocky outcrops) behind the Chardonnay vine block.  We have used the existing baboon trails to get to the koppies and then do a bit of bundu-bashing through the stunning Fynbos vegetation.  The elusive and endemic Franschhoek Fan Aloe plant as well as the Franschhoek Blushing Bride Protea feature prominently on the trail and are not found in many other places with such easy access.

Although the hike is not at great height, the koppies are fabulous to visit and the views from the top of the Simonsberg Moutain one the one side and the Berg River Dam in the far distance on the other, are awesome.

Once we are back on ground level, we pop in to the tasting room for a complimentary wine tasting.  A well deserved reward after a great hike.

PLEASE NOTE:  A short section of this hike is not yet cleared and some bundu-bashing is required.  The vegetation is low however, so it is still a relatively easy ramble.  Please wear JEANS and good walking shoes / hiking boots and Bug-repellent is highly recommended.

5km mountain side hike

This stunning 5km hike is situated on the side of the Wemmershoek Mountains behind the La Motte Wine Estate.  It is fairly strenuous with some uphill sections and a few tricky trail sections but is very doable.  The view, as with all our trails, is amazing and the pristine Fynbos vegetation is stunning, even for the absolute novice.

It has a sheltered rest spot so bring along some snacks or light picnic and enjoy the views and being one with nature. Don't forget your camera phone, you'll want to take pics of this view.

When we are back on level ground, you are welcome to request a wine tasting at La Motte's tasteful tasting room.  Their world-class wines are well worth it and are a great reward for a good hike.  Please add as an extra when booking.
